About
About the Rolex Submariner
Launched in 1953 as one of the first wristwatches rated for serious diving, the Submariner pairs a unidirectional rotating bezel — used to time a dive's remaining air, not just track elapsed minutes — with 300m of water resistance and the three-piece Oyster bracelet. Rolex has sold both a no-date Submariner and a Submariner Date since the 1960s, and case size grew from a vintage 40mm to the current generation's 41mm when the Cerachrom ceramic bezel insert arrived. Steel, two-tone, and full-gold versions all exist, and specific dial and bezel color combinations have earned their own nicknames among collectors — green ('Kermit'), green dial with black bezel ('Starbucks'), and blue-and-black among them. Widely searched vintage and modern references include the 5513, 16610, 116610LN, and the current 124060.
We disclose condition plainly: mint, excellent, good or fair, whether it ships with the original box and papers or full set, and any service history we know about. A Submariner without its papers isn't necessarily a concern — many trade without a full set — but we tell you exactly what documentation comes with the specific watch you're looking at before you buy.
Our Rolex models guide covers how the Submariner fits into the rest of the Rolex catalog, and our Rolex nicknames guide breaks down what those bezel and dial nicknames actually mean.
