Do Lab-Grown Diamonds Hold Their Value?
Honestly, no — lab-grown diamonds don’t hold their value well. They typically resell for 10–25% of retail, versus 30–60% for a comparable natural diamond, and continued price drops push that lower over time. The right way to think about a lab-grown stone is as a way to buy far more size and sparkle today, not as an asset you expect to recover money from later.
The numbers: resale vs retail
Resale is the one place lab-grown and natural genuinely diverge. A natural diamond bought at retail typically recovers 30–60% in the private resale market; investment-grade natural stones (D–F color, IF–VVS clarity, 2ct+, GIA) can hold or modestly appreciate. A lab-grown diamond, by contrast, generally recovers 10–25% — and often closer to the bottom of that range.
That gap isn’t a knock on quality. A lab-grown diamond is real diamond, chemically and optically identical to mined. The difference is purely market economics.
Why the value falls
The cause is supply, not science. Over roughly five years, CVD and HPHT growing capacity in India and China scaled dramatically, and wholesale lab-grown prices fell on the order of 70%+. When brand-new stones keep getting cheaper every year, anyone reselling a used one has to discount below the falling new price — so the secondhand market stays soft. Most analysts expect the wholesale floor to approach production cost and stabilize, but the resale discount is structural and unlikely to reverse.
So who should buy lab-grown?
Plenty of people — when the goal is the stone, not its resale:
- Maximize size and sparkle on a budget. Lab-grown lets you wear a 2–3ct look for the price of a sub-1ct natural.
- Fashion and everyday pieces — studs, tennis bracelets, right-hand rings — where you want presence without a heirloom-level outlay.
- Buyers who simply aren’t planning to resell. If the ring stays in the family, open-market resale never enters the picture.
If long-term value retention matters to you, that points toward natural diamonds instead — see also whether lab-grown is worth it for the full trade-off.
How our trade-in changes the math
Open-market resale isn’t your only exit. We offer 100% trade-in credit toward a stone of at least 1.5× the original value, on lab-grown and natural alike. That means your purchase keeps its full value within an upgrade even if its open-market resale is low — a practical hedge for clients who expect to size up for a future anniversary.
