Choosing a Birthstone for Daily Wear
- Hardness decides where a stone belongs. Diamond, ruby and sapphire are hard enough for a ring worn every day.
- Aquamarine, amethyst and citrine wear well in a ring and take scratches slowly.
- Garnet and peridot sit in the middle. They suit a ring worn with a little care, and they are easy in a pendant or earrings.
- Emerald is hard but brittle, so a ring with an emerald is best in a setting that guards the edges of the stone.
- Pearl, opal and turquoise are soft, and they last longest in pendants and earrings rather than a ring worn every day.
- Tanzanite is softer than sapphire and fits a pendant or earrings better than a daily ring.
- Many colored stones are heated or otherwise enhanced, so ask what a specific stone has had before you buy it.
- Setting matters as much as the stone. A bezel protects the edge of a stone in a ring, and prongs let more light into a stone in a pendant.
