Gemstone Names by Color
Gemstone names tell you what a stone is, and color is usually the way in. Blue sapphire, blue topaz and aquamarine all read as blue. Emerald and peridot are green, ruby and garnet are red, amethyst and alexandrite are purple, pink tourmaline and morganite are pink, citrine is yellow, onyx is black and pearl is white. Each color page lists the jewelry we carry in those stones.
Two stones of the same color can wear very differently. Sapphire and ruby rate 9 on the Mohs scale, so they suit a ring worn every day. Emerald, aquamarine and morganite sit at 7.5 to 8 and chip more easily, so a protective setting helps in a ring. Peridot, amethyst, citrine and garnet fall between 6.5 and 7.5, which suits pendants and earrings best and rings that are worn with care. Pearl is the softest of the group, at 2.5 to 4.5, and is best set where it will not be knocked.
Metal changes how a color reads. Yellow gold warms ruby, garnet and citrine. White gold and platinum keep sapphire, aquamarine and amethyst cool. Rose gold suits morganite and pink tourmaline.
