The November birthstone is citrine, the yellow-to-amber variety of quartz, and topaz shares the month, so November has two stones to choose from. Citrine runs from pale lemon to deep orange-brown, and the saturated golden and orange-yellow stones are the most prized. It measures 7 on the Mohs scale, which is durable enough for daily wear. Topaz jewelry is the other side of the month. The stone measures 8 on the Mohs scale, and blue is the color most buyers meet, though topaz also occurs in yellow, pink and colorless forms.

Most citrine on the market began as amethyst or smoky quartz that was heated until it turned golden. That treatment is permanent under normal wear, and naturally yellow citrine is far scarcer. Blue topaz follows a similar pattern. The pale natural material is irradiated and heated to reach the Swiss blue and the darker London blue shades, and the color is stable once the treatment is done.

Citrine has no cleavage plane, so it suits rings, pendants and earrings that are worn often. It reads richest in yellow gold, warms further in rose gold, and looks cooler and paler in white gold. Topaz is harder but has one direction of perfect cleavage, where a sharp knock can split the stone. In a ring that argues for a bezel or a halo that shields the edges, and pendants and earrings are the gentlest homes for it.
