About the Four Gemstones

Four gemstones make up this collection: sapphire, ruby, emerald and pearl. Sapphire and ruby are the same mineral, corundum. Ruby is the red variety and sapphire is every other color, most often blue. Emerald is the green variety of beryl. Pearl is the odd one out: it forms inside a living mollusc rather than in rock, which is why it is softer and needs different care.

Hardness decides how a stone is worn. Corundum rates 9 on the Mohs scale, so sapphire and ruby suit a ring worn every day. Emerald rates 7.5 to 8 but is brittle, which favours a protective setting and gentler wear. Pearl is the softest of the four and is usually chosen for earrings, pendants and strands, where it takes fewer knocks.

Treatment is part of the choice. Heating is routine for sapphire and ruby, emerald is commonly oiled to improve its clarity, and pearls are cultured. Ask us about the treatment on any piece you are considering.

The stones also mark milestones. On the traditional gemstone list, sapphire is the fifth and forty-fifth anniversary, ruby is the fifteenth and fortieth, emerald is the twentieth and pearl is the thirtieth.
