The colour holds in normal wear but not against heat or harsh chemicals. The stone has no fire of its own, so it reads as a flat, deep black that sets off the metal and any diamonds around it.

Onyx measures 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. That is durable enough for pendants and earrings, which rarely take a knock, and for rings worn with some care. A ring worn every day meets hard surfaces, and onyx scratches and chips more readily than sapphire at 9 or diamond at 10. A bezel or a low, protected setting suits an everyday onyx ring better than tall prongs.
