What Is a Pavé or Hidden Halo Engagement Ring?
A pavé engagement ring (also called a pavé band engagement ring or engagement ring with pavé band) has small diamonds set closely together along the band or top surface of the ring, with metal prongs barely visible between them. The effect is a continuous strip of sparkle that draws the eye toward the center stone. ‘Pavé’ is French for ‘paved’ — the diamonds appear to pave the metal surface. A typical pavé band holds 30–90 small accent diamonds at 0.005–0.02 carats each, for total accent weight of 0.2–0.6 carats.
A hidden halo engagement ring is a different but related technique: a ring of small diamonds set UNDERNEATH the center stone’s basket — visible only from the side profile or at angles, not when looking straight down. From above, the ring looks like a clean solitaire; from the side, it sparkles dramatically. The combination of pavé band + hidden halo is one of the most popular contemporary engagement-ring choices because it adds sparkle without breaking the solitaire silhouette from above.
Both techniques add accent-diamond brilliance without surrounding the center stone with a visible halo from above. The result reads as more modern and minimalist than full-halo designs while delivering significant additional sparkle. Hidden halo engagement rings have become one of the fastest-growing engagement-ring sub-styles in the last 5 years.

Hidden Halo Variants — Single, Double, and Side-Hidden
Three hidden halo variants offer different sparkle intensities:
Single hidden halo — one ring of small pavé diamonds tucked under the center stone’s basket. Visible only from the side; reads as a clean solitaire from above. The most-popular hidden halo configuration. Adds approximately $800–$1,500 over an equivalent plain solitaire.
Double hidden halo — two concentric rings of pavé diamonds stacked under the basket: one immediately below the center stone, a second slightly larger ring below that. The most dramatic hidden halo variant, with two visible bands of side sparkle. Adds approximately 30–40% over single hidden halo cost.
— pavé diamonds set along the SIDES of the basket (not all around it), visible only from the east or west profile angles. The most subtle variant; adds dimension without dominating the side profile.
