What Is a Pavé or Hidden Halo Engagement Ring?
Both styles add sparkle without a visible halo — and the pavé band + hidden halo combination is one of the most popular contemporary choices, more modern and minimalist than a full visible halo.
- Pavé band — small diamonds set closely along the band, prongs barely visible, for a continuous strip of sparkle. A typical band holds 30–90 accents at 0.005–0.02ct each (0.2–0.6ct total).
- Hidden halo — a ring of small diamonds tucked UNDER the center stone’s basket; visible only from the side, reading as a clean solitaire from above. See our halo engagement rings guide for visible-halo variants.
Hidden Halo Variants — Single, Double, and Side-Hidden
The pavé hidden halo comes in three intensities:
- Single hidden halo — one pavé ring tucked under the basket; clean solitaire from above, sparkle from the side. The most-popular config; adds ~$800–$1,500 over a plain solitaire.
- Double hidden halo — two concentric pavé rings stacked under the basket, two visible bands of side sparkle. The most dramatic variant; adds ~30–40% over single.
- Side-hidden halo — pavé along the SIDES of the basket only, visible from east/west angles. The most subtle; adds dimension without dominating the profile.
Pavé Band Variants — Micro Pavé, French Pavé, Shared Prong
Several pavé band techniques produce different visual effects:
- Shared prong — the standard setting; one metal prong shared between adjacent diamonds. Most secure and most-used; ~50–60 accent diamonds across a typical women’s band.
- Micro pavé — extremely small accents (0.005–0.010ct) set tightly for a continuous diamond sheen. Higher craftsmanship, 15–25% premium.
- French pavé (fishtail) — V-shaped cuts between diamonds let more light into each stone, dramatically brighter per stone; more precise and more delicate over decades.
- 3-sided / fully pavé — pavé wraps three sides (top, inside top, partial sides) for multi-angle sparkle; fully pavé covers all visible surfaces for maximum sparkle and stone count.
Pavé Engagement Rings for Women
Pavé has become the modern default — the vast majority of women’s engagement rings under $20,000 include some form of pavé band, hidden halo, or both. Most-popular configurations at our showroom:
- Round center + pavé band — the classic; cleanest, most timeless pavé config.
- Oval center + hidden halo + pavé band — the most-requested contemporary configuration.
- Round center + hidden halo + pavé band — maximum sparkle with solitaire purity from above.
- Cushion + hidden halo — vintage-romantic with modern detail.
- Princess + pavé band — angular contrast.
- Pairing — pair with a diamond eternity or half-eternity band so sparkle extends across the finger.
Pavé Engagement Rings by Metal & Why ATL
Pavé benefits more from premium metals than any other style — the many small prongs see more wear than a single center setting:
- Platinum — the premium choice; its rigidity holds the many tiny pavé prongs over decades. Strongly recommended (with 18K white gold) for fully-pavé or micro-pavé. See platinum bands.
- 14K / 18K white gold — reads like platinum at 30–50% the cost; needs rhodium re-plating. 18K is preferred over 14K (softer alloy is gentler on tiny prongs); avoid 14K for active wearers.
- Yellow gold — warm-cool contrast (gold + white diamonds).

Every ring includes lifetime cleaning, prong inspection (recommended every 12–18 months), and 100% trade-up credit; a lost accent runs $25–$75 plus labor to replace.
