What Is a Heart Shaped Diamond?
A heart shaped diamond is a brilliant-cut stone in the silhouette of a heart — two soft lobes meeting at a cleft at the top, narrowing to a pointed tip at the bottom. It uses 56 to 58 facets in a brilliant pattern (similar to a pear cut), and is one of the oldest documented diamond shapes — Mary Queen of Scots gifted a heart-shaped diamond to Queen Elizabeth I in 1562.
Symmetry is the single most critical evaluation criterion for a heart shaped diamond. The two lobes must be perfectly mirrored, the cleft must sit precisely on the center axis, and the point must align directly below the cleft. Even small asymmetries are immediately visible because the brain is highly tuned to recognize heart silhouettes.
Our Atlanta master jewelers recommend a minimum carat weight of 0.50 (ideally 1.00+) for heart shaped center stones — below this size the heart silhouette becomes ambiguous. Length-to-width ratio is typically 1.00 (as tall as wide), with an acceptable range of 0.90 to 1.10.
