What Is a Marquise Cut Diamond?

The marquise cut — also the navette, French for “little boat” — is an elongated diamond with 56 brilliant facets and two tapered, pointed ends. Commissioned by King Louis XV for the Marquise de Pompadour, it’s one of the few cuts with documented royal origins.
- Largest face-up per carat — a 1ct marquise looks visually larger than a 1ct round of the same grade, with full brilliant-cut fire.
- Elongating — the pointed ends make the finger appear longer.
- Best ratio — the most flattering length-to-width range is generally 1.85–2.10.

Choosing Your Marquise Diamond

Three characteristics matter most when selecting a marquise — we hand-select stones with excellent or very good symmetry and discuss bowtie candidly:
- Symmetry — both points perfectly aligned along the center axis.
- Bowtie management — a dark optical pattern across the center; well-cut stones minimize it.
- Point integrity — sharp, undamaged tips.
Marquise diamond pricing typically runs 10–25% lower than round brilliants of equivalent quality because the marquise rough yields less waste during cutting. This makes the marquise an excellent value option for clients prioritizing visual size without sacrificing certification quality.
