What is the difference between natural and lab-grown diamonds?

Both are real diamonds — optically, chemically, and physically identical. Natural diamonds form over billions of years deep in the earth; lab-grown diamonds are created in weeks in a controlled lab environment using either CVD or HPHT methods. The primary differences are price (lab-grown costs 40–60% less than equivalent natural) and resale value (natural retains value far better over decades). Both are GIA-certifiable and look identical to the naked eye.

How are diamonds graded?

Diamonds are graded by the 4Cs: cut (proportions and polish — the biggest driver of brilliance, graded Excellent through Poor), color (D colorless through Z light yellow), clarity (FL flawless through I3 included), and carat (weight, 1ct = 200mg). We recommend prioritizing cut first — a well-cut diamond with lower color and clarity grades will outshine a poorly-cut diamond with better paper grades. Every diamond at our showroom from 0.50ct+ is GIA-certified.

What gemstones do you carry beyond diamonds?

We stock the four major colored gemstones — sapphire (every color, not just blue), ruby, emerald, and pearl (Akoya, Tahitian, South Sea) — plus semi-precious stones: amethyst, citrine, garnet, peridot, aquamarine, tanzanite, tourmaline, morganite, and opal. All colored stones are ethically sourced and we can provide gemological certification for any stone over $1,000.

How are colored gemstones priced?

Colored gemstones are priced by color saturation (the most important factor, far more than carat), clarity (visible inclusions), cut, and treatment (untreated stones command 2–5x the premium of heated/oiled stones). Top-color unheated Burmese rubies and unheated Kashmir sapphires are among the most valuable gems on earth, sometimes exceeding diamond prices per carat.

Can I bring a stone for evaluation or re-setting?

Accepted Answer

Yes — our atelier specializes in setting heirloom or upgraded stones. Bring the stone in any setting and we'll evaluate it (GIA grading available for an additional fee if not already certified), then design a new piece around it. Resetting projects typically take 4–6 weeks. We also accept loose stones for new commissions and verify provenance and certification before pricing.

How do I care for colored gemstones?

Accepted Answer

Different stones need different care. Sapphire and ruby (corundum, 9 on Mohs) are nearly as hard as diamond and tolerate ultrasonic cleaning. Emerald (7.5–8) is brittle and often oil-treated — never use ultrasonic, only warm soapy water with a soft brush. Pearl is organic and porous — wipe with a soft damp cloth, never use chemicals or ultrasonic, and store separately from other jewelry. Opal contains water and can craze if dehydrated — store in slightly humid conditions. We provide a care card with every gemstone purchase.
