Hoop Earring Sizes: 8mm Huggies to 50mm Hoops

You measure hoop diameter straight across the open circle of the earring. That is the widest point, from one side to the other. Every size below is built to that same measure. Further down this page you will see the metals, gemstones, and closures for each size.

• 8mm & 10mm huggies (small hoops). These sit close to your ear. It’s our most-sold size. Good for daily wear, sleep, and exercise. From $250 in plain gold, $500 with diamonds.
• 15mm. A bit bigger than a huggie. You can see it, but it’s not bold. Good for work. From $350.
• 20mm. A small classic hoop — simple, but noticeable. From $400.
• 25mm. A medium hoop. Wear it all day or all night. From $500.
• 30mm. A medium statement size. Popular for evenings and special events. From $600.
• 40mm. A large hoop. Makes a bold statement at night. From $800.
• 50mm. An oversized hoop. A bold fashion statement. From $1,200.
• 60mm and up. Extra large. Worn in photo shoots and on red carpets. From $2,000.

How to choose your hoop size

Start by asking how often you will wear the earring. Will it stay in every morning, through sleep, showers, and the gym? If so, huggies and small hoops (8–15mm) are built for that.

They hinge shut and sit close to your ear. They will not catch on a pillow or a hood.

Styling changes the choice — wear it for work, with a chain, or for evenings.

• Small and medium hoops (15–35mm) — most clients wear these for both day and evening.
• Large and oversized hoops (40mm and up) — bought for one big event, not all-day wear.

Face shape and hair length matter less than most guides say. Two things matter more: size, and how often the earring leaves your ears.

Sub-10mm and 50mm+ sizes split opinion the most. If this is your first pair of hoops, start in the middle of the chart. 15–30mm is the safer choice.

Huggies vs. hoops

Every huggie is a hoop. But not every hoop is a huggie. A huggie is small, typically 8–12mm.

It hinges shut. It sits close enough to the lobe to “hug” it instead of swinging.

“Hoop earrings” is the bigger name. It covers every size, from those same 8mm huggies through 60mm-and-up statement pieces.

The real difference is fit, not just size.

• A huggie’s small size and hinge — keep it snug against the ear. That is why it survives sleep and exercise.
• A 30mm or 40mm hoop — built to move, and to be seen doing it.

Diamond hoops by size

How a hoop is set with diamonds changes with its size, not just its price. We use three settings for almost every diamond hoop we make.

• Diamond huggies. Our most popular diamond hoop — small (8–12mm) pavé diamond hoops in 14K gold, from $600. Safe for daily wear, sleep, and exercise.
• Front-facing pavé hoops. Diamonds cover only the front half, the part you see face-on. Fewer diamonds, lower price. Available 15mm to 50mm. It is our most common setting on larger hoops.
• Inside-outside diamond hoops. Diamonds cover both the outer and inner faces. You see them from every angle. That is roughly double the diamonds of a front-facing hoop at the same size. A carat is a diamond’s weight. These are most popular in 14K or 18K white gold. They run 1–3 carat total weight, $3,500–$15,000+.

A full 360° encrusted hoop has pavé diamonds all the way around. That includes the back-facing surface. It uses the most diamonds of any style. We usually save it for larger sizes, where there’s enough hoop to encrust.

Metal changes how heavy a hoop feels. It also changes how well it holds up every day.

• 14K gold (white, yellow, or rose) — the most popular choice. Strong enough for daily wear and sleep, from $250 for huggies.
• 18K gold — richer in color, but softer. Better for special statement hoops than for daily huggies.
• Platinum — the toughest and most hypoallergenic metal. It costs more to work with. That is why we mostly use it for diamond-set hoops.
• Sterling silver — an affordable starter metal from $80. Best for smaller sizes, since it needs more frequent polishing.

Hoop closures, and custom sizing

How a hoop closes is the other thing that shifts with size. We use three closures for almost every hoop we carry.

• Hinged hoops — a small hinge on one side, a snug clasp on the other. This is our most common and most secure closure. Almost every huggie uses it.
• Click-top hoops — a ball or bar that clicks into place and comes off. Shows up more often on oversized fashion hoops.
• Endless hoops — a thin wire that threads through the ear. It tucks back into the hoop body. Our simplest look, a bit less secure than hinged, but visually the cleanest.
