Hoop Earring Sizes: 8mm Huggies to 50mm Hoops
Hoop earring size is measured by diameter, from the 8mm huggies that sit close to the earlobe up to 50mm and larger statement hoops. Diameter is what decides everything else about how a hoop wears — whether it can go to sleep with you, whether it catches on a scarf, and how much presence it reads at a distance.
The right size comes down to how you plan to wear it. Below is the full size chart, how to choose between them, and how diamond setting, metal, and closure change as the diameter goes up.
Hoop earring size chart
Hoop diameter is measured straight across the open circle of the earring — the widest point, from one side of the hoop to the other. Every size below is built to that measurement, in the metals, gemstones, and closures covered further down this page.

How to choose your hoop size
Start with how often the earring will actually be on. If it’s going in every morning and staying in through sleep, showering, and the gym, huggies and small hoops (8–15mm) are the size range built for that — hinged construction that sits close enough to the lobe not to catch on a pillow or a hood.
If the hoop is going to be styled — worn for work, layered with a chain, or saved for evenings — the calculation changes. Small and medium hoops (15–35mm) are the range most clients keep for daily-to-evening versatility, while large and oversized hoops (40mm and up) are bought as statement pieces for a specific occasion rather than all-day wear.
Face shape and hair length matter less than most guides suggest — diameter and how often the piece leaves your ears are the two decisions that actually govern comfort and longevity. Sub-10mm and 50mm+ sizes are the two ends of the range that split opinion most, so if you’re choosing your first pair of hoops, the 15–30mm middle of the chart is the safer starting point.
Huggies vs. hoops
Every huggie is a hoop, but not every hoop is a huggie. “Huggie” (or hugger hoop) describes both a size and a fit: small, typically 8–12mm, hinged, and sitting close enough to the lobe to “hug” it rather than swing. “Hoop earrings” is the umbrella term for the entire category, from those same 8mm huggies through 60mm-and-up statement pieces.
The practical difference is fit, not just size: a huggie’s small diameter and hinge keep it snug against the ear, which is why it’s the size range that survives sleep and exercise. Diamond hoops by size
How a hoop is set with diamonds changes with its size, not just its price. Three configurations cover nearly every diamond hoop we make:
- Diamond huggies. The most-popular diamond hoop style — small (8–12mm) pavé diamond hoops in 14K gold, starting at $600. The daily-wear diamond piece, sleep-safe and exercise-friendly.
- Front-facing pavé hoops. Diamonds set across the outer-facing front half only — visible face-on, lower diamond count, lower price. Available 15mm to 50mm, and the most common configuration on larger hoops.
- Inside-outside diamond hoops. Diamonds on both the outer and inner faces, visible from every angle. Roughly double the diamonds of a front-facing hoop at the same diameter, most popular in 14K or 18K white gold at 1–3 carat total weight, $3,500–$15,000+.
A full 360° encrusted hoop — pavé around the entire circumference, including the back-facing surface — is the most diamond-intensive configuration and usually reserved for larger diameters, where there’s enough hoop to encrust.
Hoops by metal
Metal choice interacts with size mostly through weight and everyday durability. 14K gold (white, yellow, or rose) is the most popular choice across every size, durable enough for daily wear including sleep, from $250 for huggies. 18K gold reads richer in color but is softer — better suited to occasional-wear statement hoops than to huggies worn every day. Platinum is the most durable and hypoallergenic option, typically reserved for diamond-set designs because the metalwork cost is higher. Sterling silver is an affordable starter option from $80, best for smaller sizes since it needs more frequent polishing.
Hoop closures, and custom sizing
Closure construction is the other variable that shifts with size. Hinged hoops — a small hinge on one side, a friction-fit clasp on the other — are the most common construction across every diameter and the most secure for daily wear, which is why nearly all huggies use it. Click-top hoops, with a removable ball or bar that clicks into place, show up more often on oversized fashion hoops. Endless hoops, where a thin wire threads through the ear and tucks back into the hoop body, are the most minimalist option — slightly less secure than hinged, but visually the cleanest.
