Its color runs from pale lilac to deep violet, and the deeper, more even shades are the ones to look for. Alexandrite is a chrysoberyl rated 8.5, the birthstone for June. It looks blue-green in daylight and shifts toward purplish red under incandescent light, so the same stone reads differently from one room to the next.
