What Hand Does an Engagement Ring Go On?
In the United States, the UK, and most Western countries, an engagement ring goes on the fourth finger (the “ring finger”) of the left hand. The custom comes from an ancient Roman belief in the vena amoris — a “vein of love” thought to run from that finger directly to the heart. A handful of countries wear it on the right hand instead, so the answer depends on where you are.
The short answer
Left hand, fourth finger — the one between your middle finger and pinky. That’s the standard across the United States, the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, France, Italy, and most of the Western world. Both the engagement ring and, later, the wedding band are traditionally worn on that same finger.
Where the tradition comes from
The ancient Romans believed a vein — the vena amoris, or “vein of love” — ran from the fourth finger of the left hand straight to the heart. Anatomically that isn’t true (no single finger has a unique vein to the heart), but the romance of the idea stuck for two thousand years, and it’s why the ring finger earned its name.
Countries that use the right hand
The left-hand custom is far from universal. Engagement and wedding rings are traditionally worn on the right hand in:
- Germany and Austria — often the engagement ring moves from left to right at the wedding.
- Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Norway, and Denmark.
- Parts of India and Spain, where custom varies by region and religion.
Religious and cultural traditions can override geography entirely, so if you’re unsure what’s expected in your family, that custom is the one to follow.
Wearing it with a wedding band
At the wedding, the band is typically placed on the finger first, sitting below the engagement ring so it’s closest to the heart. Afterward, most people stack both on the same finger — band underneath, engagement ring on top. Others move the engagement ring to the right hand, or have a jeweler solder the two into a single set.
