How the weld works

The weld happens on a jump ring, which is a very small open ring of metal. First the chain is laid against your wrist and cut to the length you want. Then the two ends are brought together and the jump ring is closed over them. The last step is a brief spark from a small welder, which seals the ring shut. That spark is the moment the piece becomes permanent.

Nothing hot touches your skin. The weld is made on the jump ring, and the jump ring is held away from your body while the spark happens. A small leather or rubber shield sits under the spark as well. The whole thing is over quickly, and most people simply watch it happen and then look at their wrist.

The jump ring is also what makes the piece removable. To take a chain off, a jeweler cuts through the ring with a small cutter. That is all it takes. Nothing else on the chain has to be touched, and a jeweler can close it again afterward.

The appointment itself is short. Fitting and welding take minutes per piece, and if you are adding a second chain, that one takes minutes too. You leave with the piece already on, and there is nothing to collect later.

Choosing a metal

We offer four metals, and we label each one the same way every time. They are Sterling Silver, 14K Gold-Filled, 10K Gold and 14K Gold. The labels matter because the metals are not the same thing, and you should know what is on your wrist.

Sterling Silver is silver, and it gives you a cool white chain. 14K Gold-Filled is a thick layer of gold bonded over a base metal. It gives you a gold surface, but it is not solid gold, and that is why we never shorten its name to gold. 10K Gold and 14K Gold are solid gold through and through. There is no other metal underneath, because the whole chain is gold. The number is the karat, and 14K carries more gold by weight than 10K.

A simple way to choose is to start with the look you want. Pick Sterling Silver for white and gold for warmth. Then decide whether you want a gold layer or solid gold. You can mix metals in a stack if you like. Ask to see two metals side by side against your wrist before you choose, because the difference is easier to judge on skin than in a photo. The metal you choose changes what the piece costs, and we quote you at the counter once you have picked a chain.
