The April birthstone is diamond, a crystal of pure carbon and the hardest natural material known, a 10 on the Mohs scale. It forms deep in the earth under extreme heat and pressure and reaches the surface in volcanic rock. Hard does not mean unbreakable. Most natural diamonds are sold untreated, though some are laser drilled, fracture filled or color enhanced, and a grading report discloses it. Lab-grown diamonds are made by CVD or HPHT and share the chemistry and crystal structure of a mined stone. The grower may treat them after growth to adjust color.
