Choosing natural diamond jewelry

A diamond is described by four qualities: cut, color, clarity and carat weight. Our diamond buying guide explains each of the 4Cs and how a grading report records them.
Carat weight and price
Carat is a measure of weight, and one carat is 0.2 grams. Two stones of the same weight can look different in size, because the cut decides how much of that weight shows from above.
Price climbs faster than weight. Larger rough diamonds are rarer than small ones, so a two carat stone costs more than twice a one carat stone of the same color and clarity. The price filter above shows what is in the catalog at each budget.
Natural and lab-grown diamonds compared
Both are real diamonds. They share the same chemistry, the same crystal structure and the same hardness, 10 on the Mohs scale. The difference is where they form: a natural diamond grows in the earth, and a lab-grown diamond is produced in a laboratory.
Lab-grown diamonds generally cost less than natural ones of the same size and grade, which is why some buyers choose a larger stone. Natural diamonds have an older secondhand market, though resale of any jewelry generally comes in under the retail price.
