Bracelet Sizing: Cuff Widths and Bangle Gauges
A bracelet is sized differently depending on whether it opens or not. A cuff bracelet is sized by wrist circumference, minus about an inch for the gap, and described by a width from 4mm to 40mm. A bangle bracelet is sized by inner diameter — the circle that has to clear your hand — and described by a gauge from 2mm to 10mm and wider.
Get either measurement wrong and the piece either won’t go on or won’t sit right, so this guide walks through both methods and the width and gauge charts that go with them.

Two ways bracelets are sized
Bracelet sizing splits into two systems, because bracelets themselves split into two shapes. One is open and flexes to fit; the other is a closed circle that has to clear your hand before it ever reaches your wrist.
- Cuff. An open C-shape that slides on from the side of the wrist. Sized by wrist circumference and described by a width in millimeters.
- Bangle. A closed circle (solid or hinged) that slides over the hand. Sized by inner diameter and described by a gauge — its thickness — in millimeters.
Our cuff bracelets collection covers the first shape and our bangle bracelets collection covers the second — both linked below, with the width or gauge chart each one takes its sizing from. The rest of this guide takes each shape in turn: how to measure, then the chart, then how the two compare.

Cuff sizing: wrist measurement and width chart
Measure your wrist circumference with a soft tape, then subtract about 1 inch — that’s the cuff’s inner length, once the open ends close the rest of the gap. Most women fit a cuff with a 5.5–6.25 inch inner length; most men fit 6.5–7 inch. Because the ends flex, cuff sizing is more forgiving than a bangle’s fixed circle, and a slightly loose fit is usually something the open gap can absorb.
Cuff width, thin to wide:
- 4mm. Delicate, daily wear, stack-friendly.
- 8mm. Slim, worn solo.
- 15mm. Medium, daily wear.
- 20mm. Bold, daily statement.
- 30mm. Wide statement.
- 40mm. Architectural statement, dramatic on the wrist.
Thinner cuffs (4–8mm) layer easily with other bracelets; cuffs 20mm and up read as a standalone statement piece rather than something worn alongside a stack. See the full range in the cuff bracelets collection.

Bangle sizing: inner diameter and gauge chart
Bangle sizing is measured by inner diameter — the size of the circle that has to clear your hand, not just fit your wrist. Most women fit between 2.5 inches (63mm) and 2.75 inches (70mm) inner diameter: small wrists run 2.4–2.5 inches (61–63mm), medium wrists 2.5–2.65 inches (63–67mm), and large wrists 2.65–2.8 inches (67–71mm). Size up if your knuckles are larger than your wrist would otherwise suggest. A hinged bangle, which opens on a small clasp instead of stretching over the knuckles, is more forgiving of an imprecise measurement than a solid bangle.
Bangle gauge, thin to wide:
- 2mm. Delicate, hair-thin. Best stacked three to five together.
- 3mm. Slim and stack-friendly — the most-sold gauge.
- 4mm. Medium — substantial enough to wear alone or stack.
- 5mm. Medium-bold, the classic standalone statement.
- 6–8mm. Wide statement, architectural for daily wear.
- 10mm and up. Heritage, boldly architectural.
Stacking bangles has one hard rule: every bangle in the stack needs the identical inner diameter so they sit flush at the wrist, no matter how the gauges vary. See the full range in the bangle bracelets collection.
Cuff vs. bangle: which is easier to size
A cuff is more forgiving to size than a bangle, because a cuff’s open gap flexes and a bangle’s closed circle does not. Get a bangle’s inner diameter wrong and it either won’t clear your hand or sits loose at the wrist with no way to correct it short of a remake. Get a cuff’s inner length slightly off and the open ends usually absorb the difference.
That flex is also why cuffs are one of the easier bracelet styles for anyone with arthritis or limited hand mobility — they slide on from the side rather than over the hand. Within the bangle category, a hinged bangle offers a similar advantage: it opens on a clasp instead of stretching over the knuckles, so getting the diameter exactly right matters less than it does for a solid bangle.
If you’d rather not measure at home, book a consultation at our showroom and we’ll measure your wrist and confirm the right width or gauge in person before you buy.
Getting sized or resized at our showroom
ATL Luxury Jewelry has handcrafted bracelets at our Snellville, GA showroom since 2009. We hand-form every cuff to the wearer’s wrist measurement rather than bending it to a fixed stock length, and we hand-make every bangle to a target inner diameter rather than cutting it from stock — both aimed at a precise fit rather than an approximate one.
A cuff’s open ends can be adjusted within reason for fit after purchase; a change beyond that requires a custom remake. Bangles purchased from us are resized at no charge within 14 days of purchase. Either way, a measurement taken at home is a good starting point — the showroom visit is where it gets confirmed.
