Bracelet Sizing: Cuff Widths and Bangle Gauges

Two ways bracelets are sized

Bracelets come in two shapes. Each shape uses its own way to size it. One shape is open. It flexes to fit your wrist.

The other is a closed circle, like a gold bangle bracelet. It has to slide over your hand first.

• Cuff. An open C-shape. It slides on at the side of your wrist. Size is measured by wrist size. This size is called the width, in millimeters.
• Bangle. A closed circle. It is solid or hinged. It slides over your whole hand. Size is measured by inner diameter. This size is called the gauge, or thickness, in millimeters.

Cuff sizing: wrist measurement and width chart

Measure your wrist with a soft tape, then subtract about 1 inch. That gives you the cuff’s inner length. The open ends close the rest of the gap.

• Women. Most fit a cuff with a 5.5–6.25 inch inner length.
• Men. Most fit a cuff with a 6.5–7 inch inner length.

Because the ends flex, a cuff is easier to size. A bangle has a fixed circle instead. A slightly loose fit is fine. The open gap can absorb it.

Cuff width, thin to wide:

• 4mm. Delicate, daily wear, stack-friendly.
• 8mm. Slim, worn solo.
• 15mm. Medium, daily wear.
• 20mm. Bold, daily statement.
• 30mm. Wide statement.
• 40mm. Grand statement, dramatic on the wrist.

Thinner cuffs (4–8mm) layer easily with other bracelets. Cuffs 20mm and up stand alone as a statement piece. They are not usually worn in a stack. See the full range in the cuff bracelets collection.

Bangle sizing: inner diameter and gauge chart

Bangle sizing is measured by inner diameter. That’s the size of the circle that must clear your hand. It must also fit your wrist.

Most women fit a 14k gold bangle bracelet in one range. That range runs 2.5 inches (63mm) to 2.75 inches (70mm) inner diameter. (14k means the metal is 14 parts pure gold out of 24.)

• Small wrists. 2.4–2.5 inches (61–63mm) inner diameter.
• Medium wrists. 2.5–2.65 inches (63–67mm) inner diameter.
• Large wrists. 2.65–2.8 inches (67–71mm) inner diameter.

Size up if your knuckles are bigger than your wrist. A hinged bangle opens on a small clasp instead of stretching over your knuckles. A hinged yellow gold bangle bracelet is more forgiving to size than a solid one.

Bangle gauge, thin to wide:

• 2mm. Delicate, hair-thin. Best stacked three to five together.
• 3mm. Slim and stack-friendly — the most-sold gauge.
• 4mm. Medium — substantial enough to wear alone or stack.
• 5mm. Medium-bold, the classic standalone statement.
• 6–8mm. Wide, bold statement for daily wear.
• 10mm and up. A bold heritage piece.

Stacking bangles has one rule. Every bangle in the stack needs the same inner diameter. Then they sit flush at the wrist, even if the gauges differ.

Cuff vs. bangle: which is easier to size

A cuff is easier to size than a bangle. The cuff’s open gap flexes. A 14k gold bangle’s closed circle does not.

• Bangle diameter wrong. It either won’t clear your hand, or it sits loose at the wrist. There is no way to fix it, short of a remake.
• Cuff length slightly off. The open ends usually absorb the difference.
• Hinged bangle. Opens on a clasp instead of stretching over the knuckles. Getting the diameter exactly right matters less here than for a solid bangle.
• Arthritis or limited hand mobility. Cuffs are one of the easier bracelet styles. They slide on from the side, not over the hand.

Either way, a measurement from home is a good start. Some shoppers call it a gold bracelet bangle. Others say a bangle gold bracelet.

Either name means the same piece. The showroom visit is where your size gets confirmed.
