Choosing a loose diamond
Four things set how a loose diamond looks and what it costs: carat weight, cut, color and clarity. Carat weight is a measure of weight, not size, so two stones of the same carat weight can look different from above depending on their shape and cut. Cut shapes how a stone handles light. Color and clarity move the price too, and small differences in either are hard to see once the stone is set.
Natural diamonds are mined. Lab-grown diamonds are made in a lab and have the same crystal structure and hardness. Both are listed here as loose stones, and each stone’s page says which it is. Our buying guide explains the 4Cs in more detail.
Carat weight and size
Carat weight is the number most people start with. You can sort this page by carat weight from low to high or high to low, and by price the same way, then narrow the list with the size filter.
Small stones, usually under 0.20 carat, are called melee. They are used as accents around a center stone and are listed under their own size category.
