How custom grillz are made

A custom grillz piece takes four steps. First we take an impression of your teeth, then we cast it in gold. Next we pick the metal and stones, and last, our jewelers finish it by hand. This guide walks you through each step, then explains how an open-face piece differs from a solid or fully-iced one.

What Your Grillz Commission Involves

A custom grillz piece takes four steps before it reaches you. First we take an impression of your teeth, then we cast it. Next we pick the metal and stones, and last, our jewelers finish it by hand. Here is what each step involves.

  • Dental-safe impression — we take a putty mold of your teeth at your first visit, the same safe process used for a mouthguard, so your grillz is cast to fit your bite, not a generic size.
  • Gold karat — karat tells you how pure the gold is, and we cast in 10K, 14K, 18K, or 24K gold, in yellow, white, or rose. Every piece is sized straight from your impression.
  • Diamond setting — leave it plain, add a few accent stones to an open-face design, or go fully-iced. Fully-iced means pavé-set diamonds (many small diamonds set close together) cover the whole surface.
  • Timeline — most pieces take about two weeks from your impression appointment to delivery, and we confirm a firm date once your design and stone plan are set.

Open-Face, Solid & Fully-Iced Grillz Styles

Every grillz piece starts with a choice of base style, and each one is cast differently from your impression.

  • Open-face grillz — a small window is cut into the front of each tooth, so your natural tooth still shows through the gold. This gives a lighter, more subtle look.
  • Solid grillz — each tooth is fully covered in one piece of metal, the classic, full-coverage build.
  • Fully-iced grillz — built on a solid or open-face base, then pavé-set with diamonds or stones across the whole visible surface, for maximum shine.

All three styles are cast from the same impression, so the fit is the same. Your choice comes down to how much metal, and how much sparkle, you want to show. Regular cleaning keeps a fully-iced piece catching the light, per Jewelers of America’s care guidance.
