The Milgauss was built in 1956 for engineers and scientists working around strong magnetic fields — its name is shorthand for 'a thousand gauss,' the level of magnetic resistance Rolex engineered into the movement using a soft-iron inner case. The modern Milgauss, reintroduced in 2007, is instantly recognizable for its lightning-bolt-shaped orange seconds hand, and the GV reference added a distinctive green-tinted sapphire crystal. It's a 40mm steel sport watch on an Oyster bracelet with a smooth bezel, sitting apart from Rolex's better-known dive and GMT lines despite similar case proportions. The 116400 and green-crystal 116400GV are the references most often searched. Because it never sold in the volumes the Submariner or Datejust did, the Milgauss tends to appeal to buyers who already own a more mainstream Rolex and are looking for something less common on the wrist.
