About
About the Cartier Santos
Cartier created the Santos de Cartier in 1904 for the Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, reportedly so he could check the time without releasing a pocket watch chain mid-flight, making it one of the earliest purpose-built wristwatches for men. The design is defined by its squared case, exposed bezel screws, and an integrated bracelet, a look Cartier carried through later relaunches including the 1978 Santos de Cartier and the most recent generation introduced in 2018 with the QuickSwitch and SmartLink interchangeable strap system. The Santos has been produced in steel, two-tone steel-and-gold, and solid gold versions, in multiple case sizes across its history.
We disclose condition plainly on every Santos listing: mint, excellent, good or fair, whether it ships with the original box and papers or full set, and any service history we know about. Case size, metal, and bracelet or strap configuration are stated on the listing since Santos references span several distinct generations.
