About

About the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak

Audemars Piguet introduced the Royal Oak in 1972, designed by Gerald Genta, at a time when steel sports watches were not considered luxury pieces the way gold dress watches were. The design is built around an octagonal bezel held by eight visible screws and a bracelet that integrates directly into the case rather than attaching to lugs, a look that became closely associated with the broader category of luxury steel sports watches that followed it. The name itself refers to a series of British Royal Navy ships, a naming convention Audemars Piguet has kept for Royal Oak references since. Chronograph versions and the modern Selfwinding Chronograph sit within this same family alongside simpler three-hand models.

We disclose condition plainly on every listing: mint, excellent, good or fair, whether the watch ships with its original box, and any service history we know about. A Royal Oak without its papers isn't necessarily a concern, but we tell you exactly what documentation comes with the specific watch you're looking at before you buy.
