Understanding This Piece
About Turquoise
Turquoise is a copper-based mineral prized for its distinctive sky-blue-to-green color and often-visible matrix (dark veining from the host rock). The finest turquoise comes from Iran, Tibet, and the American Southwest. Turquoise scores just 5–6 on Mohs (relatively soft) and is porous, so it requires care: avoid oils, cosmetics, and chemicals that can stain the stone. Turquoise is the December birthstone (alongside tanzanite) and 11th-anniversary gem, with deep cultural significance in Native American, Persian, and Tibetan traditions.
About Hoop Earrings
Hoop earrings are circular or oval rings of metal that pass through the ear piercing. Sizes range from small huggies (10–12mm diameter) that hug the lobe to large statement hoops (50mm+) that drop dramatically. Hoops can be plain polished metal, diamond-set across the front face (inside-out hoops are set on both faces), or sculptural geometric designs. The style is among the most enduring categories in fine jewelry — gold hoops trace continuous use back to ancient Egypt and Greece.
